Roadmap

What is being considered, and what people ask for most. Vote on what should come first, and if one of these matters to you, say why in a note. Only the person building Margin reads them. Updated 5 October 2026.

The editor9

Math blocks

$$ blocks and inline $…$, rendered as you type, like everything else in the editor.

Mermaid diagrams

A fenced mermaid block becomes the diagram. The source stays in the file.

Numbered todos

- [ ] 1. lists that count, and keep counting when you tick one off.

Coloured text

A little colour for a word or a line, without dropping into HTML.

Images that fill the width

A photo on its own line can sit centred or stretch to the margins, from one button on the image.

Table of contents

The headings of a long note in a rail beside it, so you can jump.

Minimap

The whole note at a glance, in the margin.

Version history

Snapshots of every note as you go. Open a version from last week, see the diff, put a paragraph back. The history lives inside the space, so a copy of the folder carries it, and the file on disk stays plain.

Custom themes

Write your own theme as a small set of colours and drop it in a folder, so the editor can look the way you want rather than one of the ways it ships with. Share one as a file the way you would share a note.

Notes and spaces9

Split-screen notes

Two or more notes side by side or top to bottom in one window.

Floating notes that snap to the edge

A detached note you can park at the edge of the screen, or tuck under the menu bar. It slides out when the cursor reaches it and slides back when you leave. Or give it a hotkey. Good for the day's todos, a burn-down list, a brain dump: the note you want one glance away all day.

From the waitlist

An icon for each space

An emoji or a symbol instead of initials.

PARA, as a starting layout

Projects, Areas, Resources and Archive as spaces you can rename or delete.

From the waitlist

Templates

New note from a template, per space: frontmatter, headings, the todo list you always start with.

Every open todo in one place

All the unticked boxes across a space, grouped by note. Tick one there and the file changes.

A date that reminds you

A #2026-10-03 chip already tells you how far off the day is. This lets it wake you: a reminder on the date, as a nudge inside the app or a notification from the Mac, with a jump back to the line it sits on. Which of the two, or both, is the question to settle.

The lines a tag sits on, not just the notes

A #tag already marks the note it sits in, and the sidebar filters to notes. This gathers the lines as well: every line carrying the tag, each under the note it came from, so a day of journal entries comes back as entries. No ids in your text, no query language.

From the community

Lock a space

A space encrypted at rest behind a passphrase, for the notes that should not be readable by anyone who sits down at your Mac.

AI6

Skills as slash commands

Your local skills show up when you type / in a prompt.

Inline prompts

Write the ask directly in the note. The agent replaces it with the answer, as a diff you approve.

Text from images, on device

Native OCR on any image you drop in, so the words inside it can be searched.

Voice memo to text, on device

Record into a note and get the words, using the speech recognition already on the Mac. Nothing leaves.

Refine an edit

Say “that, but shorter” to a proposal instead of running the whole action again. The draft and the reason for it stay in hand until you accept or reject.

Special handling of agent skills and rules

A skill or a rule file is recognised for what it is: shown by its name rather than as a folder holding an Untitled note, kept under the filename the agent expects, and rendered to be read, not ticked off.

From feedback

Apple Shortcuts actions

Create a note, append to one, read one back. Enough for Shortcuts and automations to talk to Margin without a plugin.

Elsewhere4

Windows

Asked for on the waitlist. No date yet.

From the waitlist

Linux

The core already runs anywhere: a folder of files, a Rust side that owns the disk, an editor in a web view. What is Mac-only is the window chrome, the quick-note agent, Quick Look and printing, and the installer. Each needs a Linux answer before this ships. No date yet.

Browser

A version that runs in a browser tab over a folder you pick, for a Mac where you cannot install apps and for everything that is not a Mac. Whether a browser can be trusted with a folder of files is the open question.

Mobile apps

iPhone and iPad, reading the same plain files. How the files get there is the open question.

Missing something?

If the thing you need is not on the list, say so here: the shape of a feature, or the job you would use it for. A person reads it, and the good ones land on this page. Or write to feedback@gomargin.app.

Only we read this. It goes to the person building it.
